CALL FOR A POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER HIRING UNDER ARTCLE 19 FROM
DECREE-LAW NR 57/2016, OF 29th AUGUST, ALTERED BY LAW NR 57/2017, OF
19thJULY
Reference ISR-DERMOTRONICS-PD
Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica (ISR) - Coimbra opens a call to hire a
Postdoctoral Researcher corresponding to the initial level according to
the Applicable Regulation, under an Unfixed-term contract under Sistema
de Apoio à Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (SAICT) – Call nr.
02/SAICT/2017 - Projeto de Investigação Científica e Desenvolvimento
Tecnológico (IC&DT), funded by Investment and Structural European Funds
(FEEI) - Programa Operacional Regional do Centro and National Funds
(FCT) under the research project nº. 31784, “Electronic Skin over
Epidermis for wearable bio-monitoring” (DERMOTRONICS).
Regulation
Decree-Law no. 57/2016, from 29th August, altered by Law no. 57/2017,
from 19th July, that approves a Doctoral Hiring regime to stimulate
Scientific and Technological Employment in all knowledge areas (RJEC).
Portuguese Labor Law, approved by Law no. 7/2009, from 12th February in
its current writing. Regulatory Decree No. 11-A / 2017, of 29th December.
1. Goals and research topics to develop: This project aims to fabricate
and test stretchable biomonitoring e-skin that bonds over the human
epidermis and measures human bio-signals. This can be used for
continuous monitoring of human health through acquisition of vital
signals such as heart rate (Electrocardiography-ECG and Pulse Oximetry),
Respiration, brain signals(Electroencephalography-EEG), and Stress level
through Galvanic Skin Response(GSR). This can be also used as a tool for
selfrehabilitation at home through serious games by muscle activity
monitoring (Electromyography-EMG). The thin film stretchable e-skin
conforms to the dynamic morphology of the human skin, thus it conforms
and stretches along with the epidermis while measuring the bio-signals.
Several ultrathin and stretchable functional layers are fabricated by an
additive lamination process, including a medical graded skin interface
layer, bio-sensing electrodes layer, stretchable interconnect layers
with integrated electronics chips, and thin film energy storage layer.
The goal is to seamlessly pack all these layers in a thin and
ready-to-apply adhesive patch.
DERMOTRONICS involves project leaders and scientists with expertise in
MEMS, Microfluidics, Biomedical Instrumentation, polymers, printed
electronics, and counts as well on the active collaboration with
worldwide recognized Soft Materials Laboratory of
the Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Departments of Electrical and
Chemical Engineering of University of Coimbra.
2. Members of the Jury: According to article no. 13 from RJEC, the jury
is composed by Mahmoud Tavakoli (President of the jury and Responsible
for the Project), Anibal T. de Almeida (Co-Responsible for the Project)
and Jorge Fernando Jordão Coelho (all PhD’s).
3. Start Date and workplace: The contract is expected to start in
January 2020. The activities will be developed at ISR-Coimbra facilities
(Pole II) and/or other necessary locations to their execution.
4. Monthly remuneration: Gross monthly Remuneration is 2.128,34 Euros in
accordance with subsection a), section 1, article 15 from Law no.
57/2017, 19th July, and with the remuneration position at initial level
predicted in article 2 of Regulatory Decree no. 11A/2017, of 29th
December, correspondent to level 33 at Tabela Remuneratória Única,
approved by Order no. 1553-C/2008, 31st December.
5. Profile of Candidate: Any National, foreign and stateless
candidate(s) that hold the following requirements can apply: PhD in
Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics
Engineering, Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics,
Computer Engineering, or related area; Proven experience in One or
more of the following areas: Electrical Circuit Design, Mechatronics,
Signal Processing, Implementation, and test; Synthesis and
Characterization of Polymers, and Hydrogels; Nano/Micro-materials;
Electrochemistry; Wireless near field or far field energy harvesting,
and RFIDs; AI, Classification, and learning methods; Printed and
Stretchable Electronics, e-skins or e-textiles. Other skills which
are not obligatory but count as a merit for the candidate: Previous
experience on Microfluidic devices; Biomedical Signal Processing,
EMG/EEG/ECG signal acquisition; Soft Robotics, Biomaterials, 3D printing.

communication skills and capacity to organize, plan and conduct tasks of
the project independently as well as present progress in national and
international meetings; Proven capacity to independently guide
non-graduate students and research fellows; Proficiency in spoken and
written English, and ability to write scientific articles. Autonomy,
critical mind, sensibility and motivation to work in a team, accustomed
to work by goals and to fulfill deadlines.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In the event the PhD degree was awarded by a foreigner
higher institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of
Decree-Law no. 341/2007,
12th October, and all formalities established there must be fulfilled by
applications deadline
6. Application process: The call is open from 2nd December 2019 until
15th January 2020. (30 working days), and the application documents
(indicated below) should be sent, in PDF format, to the emails
