*Public Talk, Dr.-Ing. Lars Ole Fichte, Wednesday, October 9th at 15h30.
Room B5.1 (Former Library - DEEC/FCTUC)*
I would like to invite you to attend the public talk “/Towards New EMC
Standards Accounting for Uncertainty/” that will be held by Dr.-Ing.
Lars Ole Fichte (Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg-Germany) next
Wednesday, October 9^th , at 15h30, at room B5.1 (former Library) of the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC/FCTUC).
*Towards New EMC Standards Accounting for Uncertainty*
/Abstract:/Any electronic device has to be tested for its
electromagnetic susceptibility, i.e. the capability to function even
under the influence of an adverse external electromagnetic field. These
tests are mandatory, usually regulated by national law (or, in Europe,
under European Union regulation) and prescribed by test standards.
Alas, with the ever-growing number of electronic devices hitting the
market and the decline of quality due to cost pressure, several new
questions arise concerning the test setup used in susceptibility tests.
This talk will line out some of the future issues to be discussed, using
HEMP test standards as an example, since High Altitude Nuclear
Electromagnetic Pulses (HEMP) are among most extreme external signals
that can interfere with an electric device.
Several statistical approaches to assess the quality of HEMP field
tests are presented and compared to the test protocol specified by a
German standard.
Other problems arising will be discussed, e.g. ageing and growing
complexity. While final solutions are not yet established, some will be
presented.

Lars Ole Fichte finished his PhD on solving low frequency eddy current
problems with a semi-analytical method combining separation and boundary
integral methods in 2007 and has been working as a researcher at Helmut
Schmidt University since. His research interest include (but are not
limited to) precise measurement of electromagnetic fields in EMC test
setups, primarily Reverberation chambers, statistical investigations on
EMC field tests and the interaction of RF range fields with biological
tissue. He is the Chairman of German URSI commission K, a senior member
of IEEE EMC society, and works with various standardization committee,
such as IEC SC77C.
