Dear all,

Just a gentle reminder aboutthe public talk “*/Intentional
Electromagnetic Interference - A Novel threat to digital
infrastructure/*” that will be held by Dr.-Ing. Lars Ole Fichte (Helmut
Schmidt University, Hamburg-Germany)*, today at 15h00, at the ISR
Auditorium.*
*
*
You are all invited to attend.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Title: Intentional Electromagnetic Interference - A Novel threat to
digital infrastructure*

*Abstract:*
Modern society relies heavily on digital devices to function, e.g.
computer servers to run port facilities, traffic control or energy
distribution networks. Under these circumstances, one possible attack
vector for a malevolent is the use of electromagnetic signals to
interfere with the computer systems of their opponents, which are, as we
saw, vital for command, control and communication and rely heavily on
electronic equipment.

In this talk, various examples of actual IEMI events (against civilian
infrastructure) will be addressed. Additionally, lab tests tests to
secure use of vital equipment will be detailed, both for conducted and
emitted signals, before the fundamentals of protective measures will be
discussed.

The focus of the presentation is on increasing the awareness of
technical personnel responsible for the digital infrastructure and will
include detailed discussions of the technical facts involved.

*Short bio: *
After graduating, Lars Ole Fichte worked for 5 years as an Electronic
Warfare specialist for the German military. He finished his PhD thesis
on hybrid analytical/numerical methods for eddy current problems in 2007
and has been working has a senior scientist at Helmut-Schmidt University
Hamburg since. His research interest include (but are not limited to)

  *      precise measurement of electromagnetic fields in EMC test
    setups, primarily electromagnetic reverberation chambers,
  *      statistical investigations on EMC field tests,
  *      Intentional Electronic Interference and protective measures,
  *      interaction of RF range fields with biological tissue.

He is the Chairman of German URSI commission K, member of the
international URSI Commission K technical advisory board, and works with
various standardization committee, such as IEC SC77C.
