*PALESTRA:**Evolutionary Robotics and its frontiers with cognitive
sciences, chaos, and LLMs
*In this talk, I will briefly present the area of evolutionary robotics
and how we can draw inspiration from and contribute to cognitive science
research. Specifically, I will present some results on how cognitive
offloading, a process also found in humans, alleviates the need for
cognition, allowing the generation of more effective autonomous agents
in tasks that require capabilities beyond reactive strategies. I will
also show how evolutionary biology can provide us with interesting
ideas, such as, for instance, using edge-of-chaos dynamics to produce
more effective exploration strategies in a swarm of minimalist robots.
Finally, I will outline my current work on combining and studying the
integration of LLMs with embodied agents.

*Mini-CV:*
Jônata Tyska Carvalho is an Associate Professor at the Federal
University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)/Brazil. He advises undergrad,
master's, and PhD students and offers machine learning and data science
courses to computer science undergrad and graduate programs. He is also
a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and
Technologies (ISTC-CNR) in Rome/Italy. He has PhD (Computing) from
Plymouth University, where he worked with Adaptive Behavior in
Evolutionary Robotics. He also holds a Computer Engineering (B.Sc.)
(2008) and a Master in Computational Modelling (M.Sc.) (2011) degrees
from the Federal University of Rio Grande(FURG)/Brazil. His research
interests include adaptive behavior for autonomous agents, evolutionary
algorithms, applied machine learning, and data science. He has published
over 40 scientific articles in conferences and journals in many areas of
his research interests. He is currently doing a sabbatical in Rome
in the Laboratory of Autonomous Robotics and Artificial Life (LARAL),
specifically researching the combination of LLMs and autonomous agents.
