- Desenvolvimento de leis de controlo locais que permitam comportamentos emergentes de enxame em cenários aquáticos;
induzir alterações no comportamento coletivo do enxame, especificadas ao nível macroscópico;
- Implementação de algoritmos de robótica de enxame e de protótipos de investigação utilizando o
middleware ROS2 e simuladores compatíveis com ROS2;

- Bolsa de investigação (ou bolsa de doutoramento se o bolseiro assim optar) com valor mensal de 1,359.64 €, acrescida de contribuições para a segurança social e seguro de acidentes pessoais;
- Propinas do doutoramento (2,750 €) no 1º ano serão cobertas se o bolseiro optar por uma bolsa de doutoramento;
- Duração: período inicial de 12 meses, renovável até ao final do projeto, condicionado ao desempenho satisfatório do bolseiro;
- Instituição de acolhimento: ISR - Universidade de Coimbra.

REQUISITOS DE ELEGIBILIDADE
i) Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores, Engenharia Informática, Engenharia Física, Engenharia Mecânica, Engenharia Biomédica, Ciências da Computação, ou Ciência dos Dados;

ii) Período de candidatura: ** 9 set. a 9 out. 2026 **.

Position in human-swarm interaction for MSc holders at University of Coimbra

Application period: ** Sep. 9 – Oct. 9, 2026 **

Detailed call for applications:
https://www.apply.uc.pt/en/procedure/15gfzlvhkd0boysq

SCOPE AND DESCRIPTION
The University of Coimbra (https://www.uc.pt/en/) is pleased to announce an open position for MSc holders within the scope of the funded project "REMORA - Swarm Robotics for the Monitoring and Enhancement of Aquatic Resources", reference COMPETE2030-FEDER-01429400. Pursuing a PhD is not mandatory; however, candidates who are willing to enroll in or are already enrolled in a PhD programme will be positively valued in the selection process. Selected candidates who enroll in a PhD programme will benefit from full tuition fee coverage during the first year and will receive support in applying for funding to cover tuition fees in subsequent years.

The grant recipients will conduct research under the scientific supervision of Prof. Rui P. Rocha (http://faculty.uc.pt/uc26413/en), focusing on novel techniques for remote human–swarm interaction and demonstrating their application in the monitoring and valorization of aquatic resources using robot swarms. The goals of the work plan are:

- Design and implementation of local control laws to enable emergent swarm behaviors in aquatic use cases;
- Development of human-swarm interaction methods to enable a human operator to induce changes in
swarm collective behavior specified at the macroscopic level;
- Implementation of swarm robotics algorithms and research prototypes using the ROS2 middleware
framework and ROS2-compliant simulators;
- Conducting experiments with physical robot swarms and participation in field-testing campaigns in collaboration with other REMORA project partners.

The workplace will be the Institute of Systems and Robotics (https://www.isr.uc.pt), located within the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Coimbra. ISR-UC is a research unit in robotics that was recently evaluated as "Excellent" by the Portuguese science agency (FCT).

The aim of the REMORA project is to transform the monitoring and management of aquatic resources in Portugal and across the European Union, addressing the need for innovative and sustainable solutions in the blue economy sector. Over the course of this 3-year project, the consortium aims to achieve a Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6) in a representative environment, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of robot swarms in two use-case scenarios: fish farms and marinas.

OFFERED POSITION
- Research fellowship (or PhD scholarship) position with a monthly stipend of 1,359.64 €, plus social security contributions and personal accidents insurance;
- Doctoral tuition fees covered in the case of a PhD scholarship during the first year (2,750 €);
- Duration: initial period of 12 months, renewable up to the end of the project subject to satisfactory performance;
- Host research unit: ISR - University of Coimbra.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT
Hold a MSc degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or Data Science.
